Yangpu District is one of the 19 districts of the Municipality of Shanghai in the China. It is located in northeastern part of downtown Shanghai, bordering the Huangpu River on the east and south, Hongkou District on the west, and Baoshan District in the north. The southern part of Yangpu District is 4 km away from the Bund, a major tourist attraction. Our aim is that the new hospital will improve the functionality of the existing hospital as well. At the end both sites can be connected by a walking bridge and function as a whole. The functional concept of the new hospital is based on an idea of central atrium or “spine” which will provide connectivity and visual orientation between different departments. The aim is to reduce walking distances and improve efficiency as a whole. The key is the placement of the inpatient department which we locate in the South of the site for ease of access and the site limitations since in the North are located existing residential buildings which cannot be overshadowed.
